The Grape Harvest

In September and October each year the grape vines at Llanerch are picked, ready for processing into wine.

It is very important to ensure that the grapes are picked at exactly the right time, in order to produce the best possible wine.

With up to 18 tones of grapes to pick its a big job, however each of the different varieties will ripen at slightly different times, meaning that we can break the picking up into five separate days.

Why September and October? It is during these months that the grapes are at their peak sugar and acid levels to produce the best possible wine. So, often on just a few days’ notice, it’s all hands on deck to ensure that the grapes are picked at the right time.

With up to 18 tonnes of grapes to handle, it’s a big job. But, with each of the different varieties ripening at slightly different times, our team can stagger the picking across five separate days.

The journey to processing

Once picked our grapes are boxed and loaded onto a lorry and driven to the Three Choirs Vineyard in Gloucestershire.

The grapes are pressed as soon as they arrive, before going through a process of fermentation, maturation and filtration (a slightly different process applies for our sparkling wine).

Once the wine has been bottled, it’s brought to Llanerch for us to serve and sell.
